Safe laser tattoo removal treatment

MessageAuthor

Question for the group. I just had my first laser tattoo removal session yesterday on a black line-work tattoo. Today, the tattoo is raised, red, and covered in tiny white blisters. It looks like a burn. Is this normal? Or did the technician burn me? I'm panicking. I've been putting ice on it, but I don't know if I should go to the emergency room.

RE: Safe laser tattoo removal treatment

Relax. What you are describing is a normal, healthy reaction to laser tattoo removal. The laser heats the ink particles so fast that they explode (photoacoustic effect). That explosion creates steam, which lifts the epidermis and forms blisters. Tiny 'pinpoint' blisters are actually a good sign – it means the laser was strong enough to shatter the ink. The redness and swelling are inflammation. This will peak at 48 hours and then subside. Do NOT pop the blisters. If you pop them, you risk infection and scarring. Keep them clean with mild soap and water. Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (like bacitracin) or Vaseline. Cover with a non-stick bandage. Ice for 15 minutes every hour for the first 24 hours. If you see oozing yellow pus, or the redness spreads beyond the tattoo, or you get a fever – then see a doctor. But blisters alone are normal. They will dry up and peel off like a sunburn in 7-10 days.

RE: Safe laser tattoo removal treatment

I had the exact same panic after my first session. My tattoo looked like a cluster of grapes. I called the clinic crying. They calmly explained it's called 'frosting' followed by blistering. The technician told me that if I DIDN'T blister, the laser probably wasn't strong enough. I kept the area clean, wore loose sleeves, and slept with my arm outside the blanket. After a week, the blisters dried into black crusts. The crusts fell off, and underneath, the tattoo was noticeably lighter. For safe laser tattoo removal treatment, blistering is part of the deal. But if the blisters are huge (like dime-sized or larger) or if they are filled with blood, that's a sign of overtreatment. Pinpoint blisters = good. Large blisters = bad. Check out a reputable clinic's aftercare photos here: https://bellasanamedspa.com/service/laser-tattoo-removal. Don't panic. Just don't pick!
